Hydraulic filters
Something is sitting in the pipes...
Fluid drives are important actuators and controlling devices responsible for many functions in vehicles. Some of their advantages are:
• possibility of easily obtaining big (propelling) forces,
• small dimensions and mass per power unit,
• possibility of easy, stepless regulation of speed of motion, which is additionally
deprived of vibrations and shocks,
• resistance to overload,
• great efficiency and reliability.

The factor which has a fundamental influence on the functioning of hydraulic systems is their cleanness. Contaminants present in hydraulic fluid accelerate the wear of the equipment elements and fittings and lead to their premature failure.
The role of hydraulic filters is to remove from hydraulic fluid such contaminants as:
Acids, foreign chemical compounds, water, bacteria, oxidation products and everyday contaminants, which may lead to the failure of precise and therefore very expensive equipment.
Depending on the required filtration precision, different filtrating media are used (see table).
| Pressure |
Filtration precision |
Filtration media used |
| Low and high |
140-160 microns |
Wire mesh |
| Low |
60-25 microns |
Cellulose |
| Low and average |
25-2 microns |
Microglass |
| Average and high |
25-2 microns |
Microglass on wire mesh |
| High up to 300 bars |
1 micron |
Metal sinter |
Hydraulic filters are not only used in industry but also in construction machines (diggers, loaders, levers), and typical lorries and buses (filters support systems, filters for gear boxes).
